The success of those early SNK fighters would lead to the creation of The King of Fighters series in 1994, a series designed to bring in the all-star cast of Fatal Fury and Art of Fighting together. Fatal Fury in particular was developed around the same time as Street Fighter II and released just months later. Developer SNK would release numerous fighting game series in the early 1990s such as Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, and Samurai Shodown. During the dawn of the fighting genre, many developers tried to set their series apart from the ever-popular Street Fighter II.
